NEWS FLASH:
Newark Memorial High School
will be presenting the play
"The Laramie Project" on November 8,9 and 15,16.
Anti-gay religious fanatics led by the
notorious and ridiculous hate-monger
Rev. Fred Phelps are protesting
this play because they fear its powerful
statement against bigots and gay-haters.
SLHS will also present "The Laramie Project"
in spring, 2003. We hope you will join the SLHS
Drama Club in attending the Newark production
and supporting their courage in standing up
against hate and bigotry.

The Drama Club thanks the audiences of
"FUDDY MEERS"
for making it one of our
most successful productions ever !

About The DRAMA CLUB:
Club President: Nick Lopez 2001-2002

A suburb of Oakland and San Francisco,
SAN LEANDRO boasts the most culturally diverse
high school community in the greater Bay Area.
The DRAMA CLUB at San Leandro High School
has taken a leading role in affirming that diversity.
It is theater's responsibility to react to the changes
in the world around us and to examine social issues
relevant to the lives and futures of our students.

The policy of our drama program has
always been to present theater that
steps beyond the traditional trite and
irrelevant style of most "high school"
drama,and to produce truly educational
theater that challenges our student
actors and  San Leandro audiences to
explore the complexity of both the
individual and the community in a diverse
society with pluralistic cultures and values.
Along with this social and educational value,
SLHS Drama can guarantee the highest
standards of performance.

Theater has always examined and reflected
the full range of human experience. That is
why The DRAMA CLUB believes that
theater -- whether as tragedy or comedy --
remains one of our greatest tools for learning.
Few plays exemplify this philosophy more
powerfully than next season's production of
theLaramieproject.

Club Advisor: Terry Minton

Our 2002 - 2003 Season:

The Drama Club
will present

theLaramieproject

"There emerges a mosaic as moving and important as any you will see on the walls of the churches of the world...nothing short of stunning...you will be held in rapt attention." NY Magazine.

"...enormously good-willed, very earnest and often deeply moving..." NY Times.

"...an amazing piece of theatre...leaves us sadder, wiser and tentatively more hopeful..." NY Post.

On October 7, 1988, a young gay man was discovered bound to a fence in the hills outside Laramie, Wyoming, savagely beaten and left to die in an act of brutality and hate that shocked the nation.

The murder of Matthew Shepard became a national symbol of intolerance, but for the people of Laramie the event was deeply personal.

TheLaramieproject chronicles the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder. Using eight actors to embody more than sixty different people in their own words, The Laramie Project is a complex portrayal that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.
